It’s Time for a Break
Since its inception in 2019, Jill! has spotlighted the work of 120 translators, working in 33 languages. Jill! has featured poetry translated from Amharic, Arabic, Bangla, B/C/S, Cebuano Binisaya, Danish, Mapuzungun, Old English, Serbian, Sinhala, Swedish, and Ukrainian; prose translated from Brazilian Portuguese, Bulgarian, Dutch, Filipino, Hindi, Italian, Swahili, Tamil, and Québécois French; a traditional puppet play from Korean, a French meditation on ‘Trumpspeak;’ a novel that supported the #MeToo movement in Taiwan; work from the Ukrainian, Uzbek, Palestinian, Yugoslav, and Afro-Italian diasporas; ‘flash fantasies’ from Belgium, autofiction from Finland, a novel from New Caledonia detailing the indigenous Kanak uprising against French colonial rule in the 1980s and so much more.
Our themed series have turned a spotlight on Writing from South Asia, Trans & Nonbinary Translators, Cotranslators and Translator Teams, Writing from Palestine and the Palestinian Diaspora, and Ukrainian Writing, including Writing on War and Resilience.
In 2022, we introduced series curated by Jill! alumni, an initiative that expanded our reach and richness immensely with translator-organized series on a wide range of themes: Contemporary Chilean Women Writers, Domesticity, The Global African Diaspora, The Third Coast Translators Collective, Translators and Authors Emerging Together, and Mexican Women Essayists Writing the Body.
In 2024, we showcased writing for children and young people from around the world during September’s #WorldKidLitMonth for the fourth year running (see also: years 1, 2, and 3).
